I get out to my car this morning and I find a note under my windshield wiper (identifying details concealed):

"My name is B**** A***** 16 C******* St #2 Blue Jetta. I have a witness to you hitting my car and some damage was caused. xxx-xxx-xxxx I have your plate # and wait for your call (Monday)"

Grrr.

First of all, the only thing I have hit with my car in recent memory has been a snowbank... certainly not this guy's car. So I don't know what this "witness" has been smoking. Second, I wonder what that (Monday) bit means... does it mean he won't be around until Monday? I called the number he gave several times today and only got an answering machine. The last time I left him a carefully-worded message telling him I hadn't hit anything but that if he feels the need to discuss the matter he can call me (I left my cellphone number).

There have been several car-window-smashings on my street lately. I wonder if this "witness" is actually the perp who is trying to mess with people's heads as well as their cars...

Call an attorney, and call your insurance company.

Already called the insurance company. I don't want to bring in an attorney just yet, though I do have one I can call. First I want more info on just what this guy is thinking...

The reason I'm suggesting you consult an attorney is that your insurance company may consider it cheaper to "roll over and play dead" and pay the relatively minor damages to this guy's car rather than fighting it. They then get to charge you points and raise your rates.

Your insurance company's interests and yours are not one and the same in this matter.
