House stuff...
May. 21st, 2004 02:41 amI haven't said much about the house lately partly because I've been both busybusybusy and dead-tired, and partly because talking about deals-in-progress tends to jinx them for me. Well at this point I guess it doesn't matter anymore...
As many of you know Tam & I have been renovating this house for a long time. From day-to-day it seems like nothing ever gets better, but when we look back over the years we see that we've done a metric buttload of work to make this house better -- better utilities, better laid out, new kitchen, new baths, new exterior, all kinds of stuff. The main thing that remains to be done is to *finish* the inside; a number of plaster walls need to be repaired, woodwork painted, some floors stripped, some drywall finished...
Thing is, we're tired. This house has been eating away at our lives for eighteen years now, and enough is enough already. We want out. We also want to sell this year because we feel the economy may take a big swan-dive after the election.
I talked to one realtor and floated the idea of selling the place as-is, plaster dust and all. I pointed out to her that 90% of the hard work had already been done, and whoever took it over would have a lot less to do than when we picked it up as a "handyman's special". She thought about it, looked it over, and gave me a price range. I did some quick calculations and decided I could actually live with that. It's not the killing we would have made had we finished the place and sold it as pristine, but it does pay off the mortgage with money left over to start building the place in Phillipston.
The realtor mentions she has a buyer at that price, and starts talking like it's a done deal. "Can I come over tomorrow to do the paperwork?" Initial paperwork is done, then buyer looks the place over. Obviously it's a builder-type who rehabs houses for a living. He seems impressed with a lot of the stuff we've done.
Realtor calls back; he's offering a lowball price. I do some quick sums and decide I just can't accept that price. I counter-offer, splitting the difference. She calls back, saying that they want to look at the place again at 5:30 today.
So I cut out of work early to be here. As I'm turning onto the highwy to get home, the cellphone rings. Too bad, they just bought another rehab earlier today instead.
Sigh.
One of my neighbors expressed some interest while this other deal was going on; I'll try him again, but I'll chase down any lead I can at this point. I just want out!!
Anybody want to buy into the MA housing market for a lot less than $200K? The house is in Worcester, but it's just two minutes from the Mass. Turnpike. We also get the commuter rail out here :) Spread the word!
