I don't agree entirely. I think that in some ways it has, but what's replaced IRC for me is using AIM, ICQ, Y! and MSN together on Trillian (which I realize also does IRC, but I don't usually use it for that).
I spent some time away from That List; when I poked my head in I noticed a lot less of the fun, day-to-day, slice-of-life stuff that used to take place and spark interesting discussions over there. Then someone told me about LJ, and I realized where those threads had all scurried off to :)
Nature abhors a vacuum, so the volume of flamage simply increased to take up the slack. I still peek my head in from time to time when I'm bored, but it's not nearly so much fun anymore...
Actually, I've never unsubbed from elbows (does that mean I've never been on elbows?). I do procmail it into a separate folder which I peek into from time to time, though. Maybe the time has come again...
(my current elbows folder has 52,598 unread messages... maybe I won't start from the beginning...)
Eh, it's still all out-of-band to actual interaction with people, and therefore low priority.
Just as with Those Lists, the time required to slog through the daily output is absurd, given the terrible signal-noise ratio. Doesn't stop people from getting snarky when I dare to ask them in person how their life is going, though. Why yes, I read LJ. Why no, I don't painstakingly memorize every single post; in fact, I rarely hit the 'previous' button even though I only read a couple times a week, and I drop people from the so-wrongly-named 'friends' list when all they seem to post is surveys and memes.

I would have said this on channel, but I'm not talking there anymore. Neener.

Date: 2004-05-17 08:08 am (UTC)The flamage reached a roaring crescendo and then a bunch of more senior folks crawled out of hiding and yelled "CUT IT OUT!" in unison.
The list has been a MUCH, MUCH nicer more productive and generally more fun place ever since.
Not saying you should resub to elbows, not saying you should abandon your LJ, but the "elbows is dead" meme is just wrong.

What ever happened to conversation?
