Palm Pock!
Apr. 1st, 2004 12:44 amThe last PDA I ever owned was a Palm Pilot Professional, old enough that it still says it was made by USRobotics. Ever since the latest self-repair to the cracked screen failed it's been sitting in the drawer waiting for me to get around to doing something about it.
Since then, PDA features have grown by leaps and bounds, so I figured it was time to simply buy a new one. After checking out the various features and prices I finally decided that I wanted a Palm Zire 71. It has all of the features I was looking for (color screen, beaming capability, reasonable memory capacity, all the applets I needed) plus I was tickled pink by the builtin digicam.
Lots of other folks seem to get the same idea; it's not easy to come by, it seems.
Tonight while waiting for some takeout pizza I wandered across the road to a Staples. There I noticed that not only did they have the Zire 71 on display, but it was marked down. Normal price-before-rebate is $249, they had it at $224. The store is way understaffed, so it took me a while to get someone to help me. When I finally did, I asked "Do you have this in stock?" He went and checked, then checked some more. Finally he came back and said "Well, all we have is the display model, and no other store in the area has any, and the warehouse doesn't have any either. We could sell you the display at 10% off, though". The display model seemed to be in pretty good condition (they had it mounted in one of those recessed displays that make it nearly impossible for customers to get their paws on the goods). So 10% off the already discounted price, plus there's a $50 rebate offer. By the time the dust settled I had snagged probably the last Zire 71 in the county, a $249 PDA, for nearly $100 off. Not bad :)
As soon as I get this hotsync stuff working, I'll post some pics I took with it :)
Among other things, the color Palms have color themes for the "desktop". I'm scrolling through and trying various themes, and there's one called "Nostalgia". It's a two-tone theme of dark-green text-and-graphics on a light-green background -- just like the original backlit monochrome Palms. Go figure :)
