So I go to Facebook and try to log in... "Your account has been temporarily suspended". It then wants me to go through some steps to reactivate it.

"Step 1: Security Check". Answer this CAPTCHA. No prob.

"Step 2: Verify Account". Enter your date of birth. Whoops. At this point, I ask myself, "How do I know that this is for real and not a phishing expedition?" The URL I'm currently at is https://ssl.facebook.com/roadblock/index.php. Because it's a subdomain of facebook.com one would THINK one could trust it, but how do I know for sure? Anyone else ever go through this?

I got spam from you today, through facebook. I'm guessing that you account has really been suspended and the spam is why.

I got the same spam. This has happened to two other friends - yes, your account is suspended.

Yeah, I got the free iPod spam from you too. I know it's a hoax it's been around about a week. I would be careful.

Since you started at the actual facebook.com and it's a sub-section of that domain, you're fine. Yes, your account was somehow compromised and it spammed the iPad thing.

As far as I know, if the domain name is still there, it's not a redirect. Unless someone has redirected the whole domain, in which case I'm pretty certain they'd figure out really fast and in the time it's taken to write this note and get replies, it'd make the news.

I guess the question is how do you get your account back?

Well, I got past Step 2 by deliberately entering a WRONG DOB, which it rejected. This suggested that they already KNOW my DOB, so no harm in entering it again (though I can envision a man-in-the-middle attack that could still snarf the info... how likely is this over SSL?)

I'm back in business

Oh crap, I totally forgot to mention the iPad spam when I saw you today. I'm sorry, I was distracted by shiny things ;P.

You want shiny? I neglected to show you this piece of bling (http://www.facebook.com/baldwinhillframing#!/photo.php?pid=4821657&id=129077608599) when I had you in the shop. I put it on the wall totally as a joke, but the other day I sold it... to frame an XKCD poster :)
