Apologies for the picture quality... Tam has the "real" digicam at the studio today, so I cobbled up a webcam for these:

Before:

After:

The latter face is a little rounder than I remember him last... which isn't surprising since he hasn't been seen since 1980. Yup, I started growing the beard as a college froshling. Trimmed it whenever it dragged in the soup but otherwise kept it part of me. Finally decided that the "real me" deserved a little "face time" for a while. May grow parts of it back, may not, I'll have to think about it...

Wow, what an improvement! You're not scary anymore! Great job!

Scary, huh? That wasn't my intention, of course, but I'm always curious how folks react to my appearance...

Originally I grew the beard partly out of laziness (I basically stopped shaving while on vacation) and partly out of a desire to look older (long history of being infantalized and belittled by parents and older siblings). Now that I'm plenty old enough all by myself I don't need help from a beard that has entirely too much grey in it :)

Oh, well, you just looked a little wild... like the Unibomber or somethin'. :-) Sorry, it wasn't very tactful of me.

Is shaving beards that have been there for 10+ years a fad now? 2 people in the office just did that.
You look fine, although different. Like way different, a totally different person! At least you don't have the serial killer image that my coworker ended up with!

I agree with her, although it does make you look younger (in a good way).

No, I never was one to follow fads... and nobody else at my office has done anything different with their facial hair (yet!).

Let's just say I've been moving in a direction of being more true to myself lately... in some ways the beard was a "mask" I wore to conceal myself from the world. I figured I'd take it off for a while; eventually I may re-adopt it as an "accessory" rather than as a part of my identity.

I just thought of a good one! Wear a suit to your next event/workday/etc. Noone will recognize you, and you can have loads of fun (just don't talk or that will give it all away)

Whoo - very nice - it takes years off your face and you can see YOU not the Beard.
