First reaction: YAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!

Later in the day a thought occurred to me. After the defeat of the amendment there was predictable whining from the anti-gay-marriage crowd, and a common theme was "Let the people VOTE on it!"

It suddenly occurred to me that this is the political equivalent of "The lurkers support me in email". These folks are totally convinced that there's tons of silent support out there, and if only they'd all stand up and be counted everyone would see once and for all how right they were...

But now I guess we'll never know :)

Which people? The problem is that if it went to a popular vote, millions of dollars of campaignage from just about everywhere except massachusetts would turn every form of media in the state into a war zone. Now there is five more years to show them that same-sex marriage is as normal and functional as different-sex ones. Not that it'll help; the worst of them would still be at it even if the same-sex divorce rate was 1/10th as high and same-sex couples all raised genius children. But now everyone here has more years to keep dreaming.
