I knit two rows at lunch today. Sitting in the air conditioned hallway. There was no air in my room until probably 6th period--it was in the 90s today. But I enjoyed knitting, so yay!
And I love remote trading in Pokemon Go. I got an armored Mewtwo today! My pokefriend in Germany got a Galarian Articuno. You choose up to three pokemon and the person you're trading with picks which to give you. Very fun!

Ok look. We’re doing mostly ok these days, financially. No room for emergencies. But bills and rent are getting paid. We have toilet paper. We get some help from family but we’re mostly surviving off my pay.
Here is the problem. We’re fighting to get back foodstamps. We lost them beginning of this month (burocacy bullshit) and they already weren’t enough to feed 4 for a month (we were supplementing) so losing what we had? Fuck.
We skipped this last scheduled grocery trip week and a half ago. We go every two weeks and buy two weeks worth of food based on a meal plan plus some fend for self meals due to dietary issues. We had to skip the trip. But the pantry wasn’t empty. The deep freeze wasn’t empty. We’ve been making do.
We have the next trip scheduled for March 30. Look. We can’t stretch the pantry past that. 2 weeks stretch was one thing. There just isn’t the means for 4 weeks. I’m stilling fighting for food stamps. We’ll get them back. It’s just at the processing speed of a snail. They need approved by end of day this Friday to shop Monday. Even then would they be released in time for a grocery trip Monday? No.
Maybe there will be a miracle. But i can’t subside on hope for such. I can’t feed my kids hope. I need to assume i need help. I need to ask y'all for help. I need to put food on the table for 4 people for about 2 weeks. With restricted (14yo has arfid) and medical (me) based dietary restrictions it costs. We’re not eating lobster, i would like (frozen) veggies though. Gotta try to feed the kids veggies.
My goal is 550$. Anything over that will go into the ongoing disabled cat vet fund. If by miracle we have ebt in time, all of it will go in the vet fund. This isn’t a lot. It feels doable with mutual aid. Can you help? Please

The latest smoke detector to howl pointlessly into the night sends out 11.3V DC onto the signal pin when triggered but running off batteries. I suspect that’s 12V nominal, and it probably delivers 12V when operating on AC power.
Most importantly, it’s not like… 500mv. Or AC. Or complicated. It’s plain, simple DC.
When acting as a non-reporting satellite node, it triggers when receiving 4V DC on the signal pin (4.0 exactly), and that voltage is polarity sensitive. -4V doesn’t trigger the alarm.
Checking for DC on the signal line, I get functionally nothing. 20ma DC at most, and even that’s something I’m picking up out of noise floor shift rather than direct measurement.
(Yes, I checked for AC as well. Still functionally nothing.)
My thought was that if the signal line was somehow floating in whole number volts (for whatever reason) than maybe somehow the right RF noise could kick it over.
The problem with that is that I can now also confirm that non-detecting units go off exactly as long as a detecting device keeps saying it’s detecting by putting voltage on the signal line. If that voltage goes away, so do the satellite alarms – and immediately.
And that’s not what happens. We have to manually intervene and shut the alarms off ourselves.
The reason I paid meaningfully more than baseline for this particular set is that they report exactly which detector went off and why. That way, if it were the signal line somehow triggering the alarms, none of them would claim to be the originating unit; they’d all report it came from the signal backbone.
But they don’t. There’s always a unit claiming to be the active detector and it’s always smoke (and there is never actually smoke), and none of them shut up until we shut off that unit, which sometimes seems to require removing it from power.
So today’s afternoon check was basically just another way of confirming what we already knew, and I guess I’ve done that now, but…
All that does is get us right back to where we started, which is, “we have alarm after alarm after alarm of different makes, methods (ionisation, photodetector), and models which just in this house are determined to go off randomly, usually but not always at night, for absolutely no detectable fucking reason, and then pass self-test just fine afterwards.”
And no, regular cleaning – even weekly cleaning – does not help. I do all the things. None of it stops the problem.
If you’re new to this adventure, I have heard this exact same story from many other people at this point – though nobody I’ve talked to has said they’ve literally taken metres to the signal wires to verify that way.
Regardless, I know it is not just us.
What I’ve been told from others who deal with this is to RMA individual units that trigger randomly one at a time until you end up with a set that doesn’t. And I guess that’s what I’m gonna do, but

Reading I've put The Pursuit of... by Courtney Milan aside for now, in favour of Refuse to Be Done: How to Write and Rewrite a Novel in Three Drafts by Matt Bell. I'm hoping it will help me finish my Yuletide stories, but I'm still in the drafting section, and that's not so much my problem. Still, it has some useful thoughts. Written with pantsers/discovery writers in mind.
In audio, I started The Hymn to Dionysus by Natasha Pulley, read by Sid Sagar. It's set in ancient Thebes, and Pulley's tendency to exoticise/other her non-white characters is transposed onto othering a god, which, okay, fair enough. I'm enjoying the voice.
Kdramas Same as last week: Undercover Miss Hong, One Spring Night, and Love Scout (ahhhh!). A delicious three-course meal. (I may have oversold One Spring Night last week when I compared it to Austen. What I meant was it's observational. It doesn't have the kinds of flashbacks you usually get in a Kdrama, showing the POV characters' thought processes and emotional reactions. Instead, it seems equally interested in everyone, in a way. The editing is so slow that it feels like a play: the actors' reactions linger on the screen, rather than the camera flicking away.)
Other TV Finished Ponies, the spy story set in 1980s Moscow, which was great, sometimes brutal, sometimes funny. Ended on a cliffhanger. Emilia Clarke is awesome!
1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed -- a documentary made up of interviews with mixed-race kids in the Bay Area. Lovely, thought-provoking, reminded me of the movie Uproar in which Minnie Driver plays the solo mum of Māori kids.
More of The Pitt. (The latest episode was super upsetting, and it really stuck with me. It's so good.)
Rooster, a new comedy set on an Ivy League campus, starring Steve Carell and feat. unexpected Jamie Tartt. Quirky and charming (and that's despite my side-eyeing Carell because of his role in The Morning Show and my difficulty with compartmentalising). We've watched the three available episodes.
Started a rewatch of Paper Girls, which contains one of my all-time favourite narrative devices (people meeting their child selves; see also Disney's The Kid and one of Richard Bach's books). It's such a great show. I'm still so sad it was cancelled on a cliffhanger.
The first episode of the Scrubs reboot. (I never watched the original, but this is fun enough.) And some more Cheers.

The train bears selkie southward again: we have affirmed that the important part is not the leaving, but the coming back. This visit was somewhat more flying than usual and complicated by just about everyone on both sides having run out of running on fumes some time last year if not the previous decade, but we had celebration and I was finally able to give her the shells and stones I had collected for her five months ago on Cape Cod, reminders of northern Atlantic. spatch and I have decided never again to pay attention to his phone when driving into Brookline. Making our way home from South Station, I was so pleased to see that the superstructure of the Northern Avenue Bridge has not yet been demolished and still stands as an installation of rust-flaked trusses, permanently perpendicular to its successor's flat concrete. What I would have called the new North Washington Street Bridge has been designated the Bill Russell Bridge since I first glimpsed it in miniature of the Zakim, a parabolic stickleback of white fish bones. We parked in the lot of Bill & Bob's for the first roast beef sandwiches of the season, so early the picnic tables had not been set up, and were introduced by WERS to the total delight of They Might Be Giants' "Wu-Tang" (2026) as we wound past the un-iced Mystic. Two days after a snow that stuck to all the branches, it is short-sleeved catkin spring, drive-with-the-windows-down weather. We watched the Charles and the Fort Point Channel scatter the same reflective blue as the sky.

It's about ten years old. But everything there is still 90-ish% accurate. The communities I'm listed as a member of are mostly ghost towns.

I'm physically disabled and fairly active in Disability Rights circles on Tumblr, and a big proponent of Self-Advocacy. I'm agnostic in theory, and atheist in practice (either way, my "religion" has a pantheon count of zero). I am prone to puns. I am a drabble purist. I am anti-generative A.I., though I acknowledge that analytical A.I. is different, and may have value in limited situations.
Contemporary TV and Movies (though I enjoy critiques / reviews of the same)

Back in the LiveJournal days, I posted several times a week, sometimes, more than once a day, if a thought occurred to me. Recently, it's been a few times a year. I want to get back into my old time habits.

I love a comment thread that goes down a tangent trail. I love when one comment leads to another. Sometimes, too, a string of emojis can be a witty reply, if done well.
Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly? No.
What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?

I generally don't unsubscribe to people, unless they start posting or behaving in the "Hot Button Issue" ways I mentioned at the start. I'd prefer not to know if someone unsubscribes to me.

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?
I suppose fairy tales and folk tales count as "fannish"?

SlasHeaven was founded on May 19, 2004, by the programmer and main promoter of the archive, Ayesha, and two collaborators, Maryam and Aura. This began after a massive deletion of fanfiction slash written in Spanish at a popular platform and with the conviction that we needed a place where we could publish in our language without restrictions. And so this website was born, a place dedicated exclusively to slash fanfiction written in Spanish.
SlasHeaven’s archivist made the decision to move the archive to AO3 after web configuration issues made it untenable to continue maintaining the archive themselves.
The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Maryam and Aura to import SlasHeaven into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, any fanart currently hosted by SlasHeaven will be hosted on the OTW’s servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.
We will begin importing works from SlasHeaven to AO3 after March. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.
We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We’ll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.
All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.

You’d like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
